Who am I and Do I Belong Here?
We are grateful to have a provincial curriculum that prioritizes the intellectual, human, and social development of each of our children. In addition to ensuring our students master the critical literacy and numeracy skills necessary for success, we have time, space, and tools to develop each student’s understanding of themselves, others, and the world around them. In a world of increasing complexity and polarization, building these core competencies has never been more important.
Using a ‘Big Idea’ from the K-9 Language Art Curriculum, Stories help us understand ourselves, our families, neighbourhood, and the world. Students have been exploring aspects of their personal and cultural identity, learning about differences, and creating spaces where they experience a sense of belonging. Approximately 100 teachers from the Abbotsford School District have participated in a 4-part virtual series with Adrienne Gear exploring her latest work, Powerful Understandings. Be sure to connect with your Library Learning Commons Teacher for the resource and check out the fantastic collection of children’s books, highlighting diverse perspectives and experiences from around our community and world. You matter, and you belong here in our learning community.
