Three Signature SEL Practices Supporting Learning
The implementation of our competency-based curriculum is grounded in the Core Competencies. Personal, social, and cultural competencies are a vital part of the growth of students as they gain a deeper understanding of who they are and how they relate to others. As a Curriculum Department, we are working to include social-emotional learning and trauma-informed practices in our learning opportunities to underscore the importance of core competencies and solid foundations for learning.
An example of one of these strategies is the use of the three signature SEL practices. When used in a learning environment, these practices provide learners with opportunities to enter learning in an inclusive manner that is inviting and increases a sense of belonging. Secondly, engaging students in inclusive strategies and promoting critical thinking, creative thinking, and communication allows them to work collaboratively and at their level. Finally, an optimistic closing will enable learners to reflect on their learning, create goals for future learning, and communicate hopes for the future. We invite you to learn more about the three signature SEL practices by visiting the Learning Support Services Sharepoint and downloading or viewing the playbook that includes many ideas for planning meaningful learning experiences.
