Summer Explorers

May 28, 2021

As the end of the year inches closer, a group of leaders and teachers are in the process of building something amazing for our students. It started back in March as group of leaders formed an inquiry around two simple questions:

  • If you were going to attend a summer learning opportunity for yourself, or send your child to one, what would it need to include?
  • What would it not include?

Top 10 answers included: opportunities for voice and choice, focus on physical and mental well-being, social opportunities, exploration of a topic of personal interest, creating something meaningful for self/family/community, build on an area of growth and strength, lots of hands-on activity and games, a safe and supportive environment, plenty of time outdoors, and applies the First Peoples’ Principles of Learning. A few highlights from the ‘what not to include’ list is rushing to learn content, lots of time sitting in desk/table or in front of a screen, worksheet packets as practice, and lack of choice and voice.

The result? Abbotsford School teachers and support staff have responded positively to the challenge and change by applying in record numbers to be part of the three-week Summer Explorers Program. Staff are now being selected to lead group of students through carefully crafted exploration of a Big Idea from the curriculum, while building each child’s literacy or numeracy skills. Early student registration numbers indicate Summer Explorers will double the number of K-8 learners who will benefit from time with talented, caring, and creative Abbotsford School District educators.
