Assets within Our Community
Recently the helping teachers and administrators from the Curriculum, LSS and Indigenous departments came together to experience and discuss the assets within our community. When we view diversity and culture through an asset-based lens, we work toward ensuring equity for all. Asset-based mindsets focus on the background, skills and knowledge that individuals and communities bring to each other. You may ask, why does an asset-based approach matter? Our district is becoming more and more diverse. When educators know more about their students' backgrounds and skill sets, they can better empathize and adjust their instruction to meet the needs of all their learners. A good start in moving towards an asset-based approach is to look at the community around you. Thinking in this way encourages culturally sustaining practices for teachers, students and the community, in addition, to providing opportunities for students to make connections between the classroom and the greater community of Abbotsford.
Throughout the summer, I encourage you to think about the assets within your community and ask yourself how these assets enrich your life. What are the assets within? How do these assets impact how or where you live or work?
