Abbotsford teacher honoured with Canadian Parents for French award

September 27, 2023

She graduated from the French immersion program in Abbotsford, and now Madison Hendry has returned to the same school district to teach in French. Canadian Parents for French (CPF) BC & Yukon is pleased to recognize the grade 8 Chief Dan George Middle School educator with its 2023 Teacher Award.

Since 1992, CPF BC & Yukon has been proud to offer a financial award of $2,000 to one or two university students completing their post-secondary education studies and planning to teach French (immersion, intensive, core, or francophone) in BC or Yukon.

“It’s heartening to hear about former French immersion Dual Dogwood students who return to their school district to teach the next generation of French language learners,” says CPF BC & Yukon President Alex Hughes. “This annual award is one way Canadian Parents for French can celebrate those like Madison who have worked hard to launch their teaching careers in French.”

Madison completed her Bachelor of Education Degree at UBC (French Immersion Cohort), has a Bachelor of Arts French Major from the University of the Fraser Valley and a DALF C1 (Alliance Française).

Prior to starting this school year as a French immersion teacher, Madison worked a few years with the Abbotsford School District as an Indigenous Support Worker. During that time, she helped translate Indigenous resources and presentations into French and facilitated many workshops in French for students and teachers alike.
